Cargo Credible: The Trucking Industry's Trust Layer

1. Introduction

Overview:

Cargo Credible is a free trust platform for the trucking industry. Drivers, carriers, brokers, shippers, insurance agents and factoring companies use it to check who they're about to work with: authority, insurance, safety record and reputation, in one place.

It started as a searchable directory of about 3 million logistics companies with Trustpilot-style reviews. It has since grown into a full due-diligence platform built on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's (FMCSA) own public data, refreshed every day, with community reviews, change tracking, lead-finding tools, industry-wide insights and a resource directory for carriers. 2. The Problem

Background:

Before Cargo Credible, the information needed to vet a trucking company was scattered across government sites. There was no community feedback on carriers or brokers, it was hard to verify a safety record before partnering, and insurance agents searched for leads by hand.

Pain Points:

• Scattered data: FMCSA registration, inspections, crashes, insurance and authority history live in separate public datasets.
• No reputation layer: nothing captured what drivers, dispatchers and brokers actually experienced working with a company.
• Slow vetting: checking authority, insurance and safety before booking a load took several lookups.
• Fraud risk: changes to a company's phone, address, authority or insurance can signal trouble, but nobody was tracking them.
• Manual lead generation: insurance and compliance teams had no easy way to find newly registered carriers.

3. Our Solution

Discovery Process:

The first version proved that the industry wanted a reputation layer. The next step was making the data behind it complete, current and verifiable. The platform now draws directly on FMCSA's public datasets (data.transportation.gov), refreshed every day, and the profile, change-tracking and tool features are built on that single source of truth.

What the platform does:

• Company profiles for every registered carrier and broker, with:
• authority status and history, including revocations;
• insurance and bond filings with their full history;
• safety performance: vehicle, driver and hazmat out-of-service rates compared with the national average;
• inspections, crashes, violations and BASIC category breakdowns, plus an industry benchmark;
• fleet and cargo details, and related companies.
• Record changes: changes to a company's legal name, DBA, phone, email, addresses, authority and insurance are detected over a two-year window. A Recent Changes feed shows them across every company.
• Search: by company name, DOT number, MC/docket number or state. Advanced filters cover DBA, city, phone, email, minimum rating and company type.
• Ratings and reviews:
• Accounts for carriers, brokers, drivers, shippers and freight forwarders.
• A company's score only builds once it has three or more reviews.
• A published review policy and community standards.
• Profile tools: companies can claim their profile. Anyone signed in can report fraud or a violation, or report incorrect data.
• Lead Finder: newly registered carriers by state, registration date and safety-alert status, for insurance and compliance professionals.
• VIN Lookup and Compare Companies, which puts 2–4 companies side by side on safety scores, inspection rates, violation counts and community ratings.
• Industry Insights: the U.S. trucking industry in numbers, built from FMCSA and U.S. Census data. The page publishes its own data limitations, for example that roughly one in five crashes can't be linked to a specific carrier.
• Resources:
• Warehouses, shippers, truck services, trucking lawyers and freight factoring.
• Safety, compliance, financial, legal, marketing, training and equipment services.
• Operations and transparency:
• A public status page with live checks on sign-in, reviews, the daily data refresh and email.
• Cookie consent that gates analytics.
• "Verify with the agency" notices on every profile.

Technology Stack:

• Backend: Django
• Frontend: Django templates with Tailwind CSS, responsive for mobile and desktop
• Data: daily ingestion of FMCSA public datasets (carrier registry, inspections, crashes, violations, insurance, authority and revocation history), plus U.S. Census population data for per-state figures
• Search & performance: indexed lookups and caching across millions of records

4. Implementation

Daily data pipeline:

• Nine FMCSA datasets refresh every day, and the status page reports how recently they last updated.
• Profiles show where each field comes from and remind users to verify with FMCSA before making business decisions.

Change detection:

• Each refresh is compared with the previous record, so that changes in contact details, authority and insurance appear as a history rather than silently overwriting the old values.

Trust and safety:

• A company's review score only appears after three reviews, so one review can't define it.
• Users can report fraud, violations or incorrect data from any profile.
• Companies can claim their own profile.

Tools for professionals:

• Lead Finder and the Compare view turn the same dataset into working tools for insurance, compliance, brokerage and factoring teams.

5. Results

Product Outcomes:

• 4.4M+ carriers and brokers, 8.5M+ inspection records, 5M+ crash records and 7M+ violation records, all searchable.

6. Lessons Learned

• Publish your data's limits. Saying plainly what the data can't tell you, such as crashes that can't be linked to a carrier, builds more trust than hiding it.
• Change history is a trust feature. What changed on a record is often more telling than what the record says today.
• Reviews need thresholds. Waiting for three reviews before showing a score keeps one bad actor from defining a company.
• Keep the official source visible. Pointing users back to FMCSA keeps the platform credible.

Cargo Credible has grown from a reviews directory into the trucking industry's trust layer: official FMCSA data refreshed every day, community reviews, change tracking and practical tools, all free to use. As the tagline says: Prove it. Move it.
