Browser Based Website Translation for Dakota Systems, a Leader in Technical Documentation Management

Overview

After opening an office in Shanghai, Dakota Systems looked to expand the global fuency of their website by implementing a feature to automatically translate their website to Mandarin if the user of the website had their browser's language set to Mandarin. Following initial consulting with Dakota Systems, we worked with them to build this feature into their website.

The Challenge

The automatic translation feature that Google and other browsers had did not produce an accurate enough translation for Dakota's use case. Therefore, it was decided that a custom translation was needed. To do so, custom functionality on the Dakota Systems website was needed. Specially, the aim was to determine if a user viewing the site had a default language setting set to Mandarin on their brower. If this was the case, then a serverside translation of the website would trigger, pulling the correct translation directly from the Dakota Website Database.

Our Solution

Automated Language Customization:

  1. Browser Language Detection: We integrated a system that detects the language preference set in the user's browser.
  2. Dynamic Content Translation: Depending on the detected language, the website’s content automatically translates to the user’s preferred language.
  3. Cultural Sensitivity: Along with language translation, cultural nuances were considered to ensure appropriate and relevant content for different regions.

The Impact

  • Enhanced User Engagement: This feature led to a more personalized user experience, significantly increasing user engagement and time spent on the site.
  • Broader Reach: By catering to multiple languages, Dakota Systems effectively expanded its reach, attracting a more diverse audience.
  • Positive Feedback: The automatic language customization feature received overwhelmingly positive feedback, highlighting its convenience and user-centric approach.

In Conclusion

The implementation of browser preference-based language customization on Dakota Systems' website is a testament to the company's commitment to inclusivity and global reach. This innovative approach not only enhanced the user experience but also set a new standard for website accessibility in a multilingual world.
